Core Values

Core Values

Values are things that we care about and consider to be important to us. They are different for everybody and can change over time as we adapt and grow.

Have you ever asked yourself why you want to be healthy?

What is important to you in life?

What type of person do you want to be?

What do you enjoy doing?

Who or what do you love?

The answers to these questions have a huge impact on our health and well-being. Understanding our purpose and meaning in life is an important motivator and driving force when it comes to making decisions that will impact our health.

The Power of Core Values & How They Impact Our Overall Health:

In the whirlwind of modern life, amidst the chaos of schedules and responsibilities, it's easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Our core values—the principles that guide our actions and define our character—are often pushed aside in the hustle and bustle of daily living. Yet, understanding and honouring these values are essential not only for our moral compass, but also for our overall health and well-being.

What exactly are core values? They are the fundamental beliefs and principles that shape our behaviour and decision-making. They serve as a compass, guiding us through life's challenges and helping us navigate towards a fulfilling existence. While core values may vary from person to person, they often encompass principles such as honesty, integrity, compassion, resilience, and gratitude.

But how do these values impact our health?

  • Mental Well-being: Our core values play a significant role in shaping our mental health. When our actions align with our values, we experience a sense of purpose and fulfilment. For instance, someone who values creativity may find solace and joy in artistic pursuits, while another who values kindness may derive satisfaction from helping others. Conversely, when we betray our values, whether knowingly or unknowingly, it can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and inner conflict, taking a toll on our mental well-being.
  • Emotional Resilience: Core values act as a source of emotional resilience, providing a sturdy foundation during challenging times. When we encounter setbacks or adversity, our values serve as a reminder of what truly matters, giving us the strength and determination to persevere. For example, someone who values perseverance may bounce back from failure with renewed determination, while someone who values kindness may find solace in connecting with others during times of hardship.
  • Physical Health: Surprisingly, our core values can also influence our physical health. Research suggests that individuals who live in accordance with their values are more likely to engage in health-promoting behaviours such as regular exercise, nutritious eating, and stress management. Furthermore, the sense of purpose derived from living a values-driven life has been linked to a lower risk of chronic diseases and a longer lifespan.
  • Relationships: Our core values play a crucial role in our relationships with others. When we surround ourselves with individuals who share similar values, we experience a deep sense of connection and belonging. Conversely, conflicts may arise when our values clash with those of others. However, by fostering open communication and mutual respect, we can navigate these differences and cultivate healthier, more fulfilling relationships.
  • Life Satisfaction: Ultimately, living in alignment with our core values leads to greater life satisfaction and happiness. When we honour our values, we live authentically, true to ourselves and our beliefs. This authenticity fosters a sense of inner peace and contentment, regardless of external circumstances. As the saying goes, "Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have"—a sentiment that rings true when we live in accordance with our deepest values.
Our core values are not just abstract ideals—they are the cornerstone of our health and well-being. By embracing and embodying these values in our daily lives, we cultivate a sense of purpose, resilience, and connection that enriches every aspect of our existence. So, let us take the time to reflect on our values, nurture them, and allow them to guide us towards a life of health, happiness, and fulfilment

Task

Sit down somewhere quiet with a pen and paper. Light a nice candle and make yourself a cup of herbal tea.

At the top of your blank page, write the following line:

“Why do I want to be healthy?”….

Take your time. There are no wrong answers, and this is for your eyes only.

Write freely, with honesty and without judgement. Tomorrow, come back to read over what you wrote down. How does it make you feel? Do you feel motivated to make any small changes to your daily routine?

Once we realise what really is important to us, then we can make decisions to dedicate more time to these things.

We only have one precious life. Don’t sit back and let life pass you by.

There is an old, famous quote, which I love that says it all:

“When you write the story of your life, don’t let anyone else hold the pen”.
